Maximising Projects’ Social Impact and Long-term Sustainability
What are UniTED Tutorials?
Our tutorials are a form of lite-touch incubation to help students think critically about their project, develop a comprehensive strategic plan, and begin implementation.
We have developed a framework, our Project Narrative, with 60 steps to transform an idea into an impactful and sustainable organisation. This provides the basis for our sessions, with toolkits to help project complete each step.
Based upon the traditions of Oxford University, every tutorial is tailored for the leadership of a single project. They generally last between 2 and 3 hours. We hold them at least every 2 months with each project. This comes to 20 hours contact time over the course of a year.
In a context such as Uganda, where university students are taught in lectures with hundred of students, these one-to-one tutorials are one of the richest learning experience students will have. From our most recent survey, students valued these tutorials more than double our costs of delivering them.
At the end of a tutorial, we will note several tasks that the project sets itself for the next 2 months. If one of these could be helped by an international volunteer, then we will connect the project to one of the volunteers within our database for collaboration. These volunteers will then join subsequent tutorials to ensure that everyone is on the same page and the project’s potential is realised.
What Do We Ask From Students?
After an introductory session, we ask all students who wish to continue with our support to pay a commitment fee of $5 for the year. This is less than 2% of the actual cost of delivering the tutorials, but it helps us to guareentee the students are committed to becoming serious social entrepreneurs, so we will not waste our time.
Who Can Apply?
Any university student or recent graduate (from after 2013) with an idea or organisation which is concentrated on providing a social good can apply to receive tutorials.
Currently, all projects are supported face-to-face in Uganda. However, we are now open to applications from project around the world to trial this support remotely.
