How They Work
We run competitions to stimulate fresh ideas, reward ingenuity amongst student social enterpreneurs, and find the most appropriate people to travel on all-expenses-paid international trips.
These trips are important to help ensure that partnerships between students are as equal as possible, with students from both sides able to travel.
Since 2012, we have been running an annual competition for Ugandan students to travel to Oxford. So far, 19 students have travelled to the UK on this iniative, as well as 21 Oxford students visiting Makerere University in Uganda.
We are currently looking to replicate this model with other universities outside of Uganda. They would be able to offer an expenses-paid trip to at least one Ugandan student. We would then partner them to a university in Uganda and run a competition to find the best social entrepreneur(s) on the campus. We would also host the international students on trips to their partnered university in Uganda.

The 2016 UniTED Competition was held in August/September. We opened it to entries from students and recent graduates from around Uganda to find the best social project.
Students were asked to sumbit a 3 page summary of their intiative, or a 10 slide powerpoint presentation.
We receive 69 applications from students from 13 different instiutions.
We were really happy that the quality of applications was better than ever before. Indeeed, all of the 8 projects we shortlisted would have won in previous years.
Many of the unsuccessful applications were subsequently offered to receive our tutorials to be even more competitive next year. The 8 shortlisted projects were all asked to present 5 minutes pitches at our conference in the Makerere Main Hall on the 13th September.
The winner was ultimately Vertical Micro Gardens. We were impressed by its proof of concept, the transformative impact it can have on beneficiaries, and its huge potential to scale sustainably without grant funding.
